Network Errors when resuming from sleep
There are some things (and errors) to expect when using local applications on your laptop. This may be most prevalent when using the VPN but can happen even if you are not a VPN user but you use local applications. Most of the actual error messages can be eliminated by simply saving and closing any open documents before physically moving about with your laptop and/or putting it to sleep (closing the lid.)
The following are to be expected and you will need to learn how to deal with them. They are caused by your network connection changing or becoming disconnected as will happen when you undock; or put your laptop into sleep mode and then later resume.
You might see your drives with a Red X on them which indicates they are disconnected. These may even linger a little after you reconnect to a network and/or VPN; but will go away as you click into them (if you truly have connectivity established)
If you don’t have network connectivity you may see the above network error. Make sure your network cable or WiFi is connected. If you are not in an office then you need to connect your VPN. Just press [Cancel] on the error and then try it again after you have connectivity.
Failure to save and close your document.
If you are used to working in the Virtual Desktop, you may have gotten used to simply shutting your laptop and going. With Virtual Desktop everything is back where it was when you reconnect and it never looses connectivity to drives. However, when using the apps on your local desktop (with or without the VPN) it is always a best practice to save and close all of your files before putting your laptop into sleep mode.
If you don’t, you risk losing your work as the file path becomes unavailable for a time being. Microsoft products may make any open documents “read-only” and you won’t be able to save back to the original file name. If this happens you will have to save it as a different name and then delete the original and then rename the new one back to the original name.
If you simply save and close your files you will save yourself the grief of seeing error messages like the ones below…
