Someone told me my email has been hacked
Well... 9 times out of 10 you probably have NOT actually been "hacked", but someone may be "spoofing" you.
Either way, it is always best to err on the safe side and report this to I.T. If they shared the email with you, feel free to forward it to a HD Ticket. Otherwise, just put in a ticket and let us know who reported it you (Name and email address). We will contact them directly to see if we can get our hands on the original message. If we can get that message we can tell if it was a spoof or not.
What is the difference between being hacked and being spoofed?
Spoofed
For someone to spoof you, all they have to do is create a new email from, say, Gmail and put your name in the display name fields. So say Joe Hacker wants to send fake invoices hoping at least 1 or 2 people will blindly pay them. He knows not many people will open some weird email from an unknown person and blindly pay some invoice. However, if there is some name recognition someone may just take the bait. He knows Bob Builder works for a company called Christman. So Joe setups up a new gmail account as bbuilder-christman@gmail.com and during the setup he puts Bob in for the first name and Builder in for the last name. Within 5 minutes Joe created a fake Bob account. Now maybe Joe Hacker did actually hack someone that had Bob as a contact, that may be where he got the name and he sends fake invoices to all those people. Or since he knows Bob works in the construction industry he just sends these out to all the contractors in the area, or all the construction project owners Christman is working for in the area. Joe Hacker even creates a nice looking email signature with the correct Christman address and phone numbers.
People are busy and Joe Hacker is just hoping someone will say, "Oh, hey, I know Bob Builder, he's a good guy. This must be legitimate," and they pay the bill, not even taking notice of the incorrect email address.
Unfortunately, we can't do much about this. Just like you could not prevent someone from sending a paper invoice to companies via the US Postal Service and putting your name in the "from" area on the envelope.
Hacked
Now getting hacked is much harder than someone spoofing you. In order to get hacked, you yourself would have to have been tricked by an email and either opened a document with a virus, or maybe you coughed up your credentials to a fake Phishing site logon screen. So it is possible, and if you think you have been hacked you need to report that ASAP!! If Joe Hacker does actually have access to your email, then his success rate of fooling people greatly increases. He can access your SENT items and actually start emailing people that you are currently working with and try to dupe them. He can get all your contacts. He may be able to log onto Virtual Desktop as you! This is very serious, but we have not had many instances of this happening to our smart ELPs!
Bottom line
Just report this kind of stuff to I.T. via a HD ticket and we'll help figure things out and fix anything that needs to be fixed!
