Troubleshooting Speed Issues off-site

If you are having performance issues at a location away from a regional office, like a project site or at home, here are some tools to use to try to troubleshoot the issue.
The first thing to try is to test your general Internet speed.  Try to make sure nothing else is going on at the site that may be eating up bandwidth (streaming video, download files, etc.)

Make sure you are not doing these tests within Virtual Desktop!!  Use your local desktop.

General Speed Test Sites, try one or more to baseline what speeds your location gets to the Internet in general.

  1. https://www.speedtest.net/
    1. Hint - click on "Change Server" and search for "ACD" then select "Lansing, MI - ACD.net"  this is our Internet Service Provider.
  2. https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
  3. https://fast.com/ (only tests download speed)

Now test your speed directly to The Christman Building (TCC Speed Tests)

Here is what the results can indicate.

  • If your general Internet speed is slow then the issue may be with your local Internet Service Provider (ISP)
    • If the speed is slow, it will be important to find out what speed you are supposed to be getting.
    • If your speed is typically much faster, it may be a temporary ISP issue on your end.
    • If this is your home connection, it will be up to you to contact your ISP.
      • Make sure your spouse and/or kids are not all streaming TV shows and/or YouTube; eating up your bandwidth!
    • If this is a Christman office or project site, put in a HD ticket with the information you learned from these tests.
  • If there is a wide difference between your general Internet speed and your speed to TCC HQ it will be important you also do the #1a test above, testing to ACD.net.
    • If your speed to ACD.net is good, make sure to do the TCC Speed Tests.
    • If your speed to ACD.net is bad, then it may be an issue between your ISP and our ISP (ACD.net).  There isn't much we can do about it but if it continues we can open a ticket with ACD.net for them to look into it.
  • If speed to ACD.net is good but speed tests to TCC is bad put in a HD Ticket with your test results.
    • If you use the VPN, it will be important to know if your speed tests are good using "The Internet Test" vs. "The internal and VPN Test."
