Viewing your Teams/SharePoint files in File Explorer

We have provided two ways to access your Teams/SharePoint files from File Explorer, and both of them are via an application called Cloud Drive Mapper.

This utility creates two drive letters in your File Explorer—drive T: and drive X:.

While the drives are similar (they both check with Microsoft to see what Teams you have access to and lists them within the drive), there are a couple of differences:

  • The T: drive will show you Teams, Teams Channels (both Standard and Private Channels), and the files stored inside of those Channels.
  • The X: drive will show you Teams, Teams Channels (Standard only), the files stored inside of those channels, as well as any other files/folders that were created in SharePoint or via File Explorer.

For a full explanation about these differences, you can view this article:

T: drive and X: drive - What's the difference?

Ultimately, if you are accessing a Team that has private channels, you'll need to use the T: drive. If you go into a Team on the T: drive and aren't seeing something you think you should, check that location on the X: drive.

The T: drive was deployed first and has been used by some departments since 2024 as we've moved files from on-premises file shares to Teams/SharePoint.

The X: drive was originally mapped to a specific SharePoint site (called TCC Links) and was primarily only for project-related Teams (basically a replacement for our P: drive) However, recent changes in Microsoft SharePoint Online necessitated our move to a different version of the Cloud Drive Mapper software. The upside of this is it allowed us to make the X: drive work similarly to the T: drive (albeit with the above differences), functioning as a "catch-all" for any Teams you have access to.

If you have any issues accessing the T: or X: drives, make sure you can see the Cloud Drive Mapper icon in your notifications area on the taskbar, and make sure it doesn't show any alert or warning icons.

If the icon looks different than the one above you can mouse over it and you should see a tooltip pop up indicating what the issue is (you need to sign in, etc). If you don't see the icon, you should be able to go to your Windows/Start Menu and search for Cloud Drive Mapper and start it up. You can of course also put in a helpdesk ticket and we can assist you.
