I think I have a PC Virus

First and foremost, it is always better to be safe than sorry.  If you think you have a computer virus and just want I.T. to look at it then please put in a ticket or call the hot-line at 517-374-0801.

There is such a thing called "Scareware" however.  This is a web browser pop-up message that claims you have a bunch of viruses and that you are in need of anti-virus software, which may (ironically) actually contain a virus that could infect your computer.  Even if they are not looking to infect your PC they may simply want to sell you unneeded software but they may also want to steal your credit card information that you punch in for the purchase.

Well, Christman has Anti-virus software and you don't need to acquire anything else.  Usually this is just a fake message in a web browser.  These usually come up when you are searching for stuff and you click a link to a bad (or infected) website.

Try this - just close your web browser and see if it goes away.  If it does, open your web browser again and do some searches.  Search for something fairly safe like "construction companies" and click some of the results.  If the virus pop-ups return, they are still "Scareware" but there may be some "bug" on your PC causing them and we need to take care of it ASAP.  Put in a ticket!!

If the pop-ups show up all the time - put in a ticket!!
